Storefronts and Synagogues

Rob Stephenson

PORTFOLIO winners   CALL SACRED. THE EXPERIENCE OF BEYOND
When the Great Migration brought thousands of African Americans north to New York City, newly formed urban congregations took root mostly in vacant buildings, storefronts or private homes. Over time these buildings were modified to more closely resemble traditional churches though these adaptations were restricted by the limitations of the original architecture and small budgets. Through signs, crosses, and other adaptions these storefront houses of worship differentiate themselves from their neighbors. They also serve as an architectural record of change.
